Motorised blinds: what to look for

When it comes to ordering blinds for your home, there are many options to choose from. The first decision to make though is whether you want electric (also known as motorised) or regular blinds. Electric blinds are a great option for making life easier for yourself. It’s one less thing to worry about first thing in the morning and last thing at night (you can read more on how electric blinds can enhance your home life). You also have the option of battery operated (or battery powered) roller blinds which give you similar functionality but without the wiring.

However, when it comes to choosing battery operated blinds, what are the options and how do you know which one is right for you? Well that’s where this article comes in. We have listed the main options below but if there’s anything else you need to know, just get in touch.

PowerRise blinds. These clever motorised blinds by Luxaflex work on an app system which means that you can set different moods for the different times of day, with just a touch of a button. Batteries for these blinds last between 6 and 12 months which is pretty impressive. Amazingly, the technology knows if the blinds are already in the position you have selected. This means that it saves on battery energy by not moving and then moving back again to the same position. Clever huh? Well it gets better. You can also change the settings while you’re away on holiday which helps with security. The batteries are just regular AA ones so you can change them yourself. These blinds are full cassette ones, which means that the tube is fully hidden at the top.

QMotion blinds. These blinds can also work on an app system like the Luxaflex PowerRise, yet there are five memory settings to choose from. These blinds have a manual override which means that you can’t burn out the system. The batteries last (wait for it…) 3-5 years! Yes, you heard us correctly. These blinds use D batteries that are fitted inside of the tube of the blind, and can also be changed easily. You also needn’t worry about replacing the motor if for some reason you decide to change the fabric; it’s interchangeable. If you have particularly high or large windows, these blinds can be made larger to fit. Like the PowerRise blinds, these are available as full cassette blinds but additionally, these have side panels to make it 100% blackout if you wish. This is makes it a particularly smart choice for bedroom blinds!

Simple raise start/stop motor blinds. There are a number of names for these but put simply (excuse the pun!), these blinds can be set to be either fully up or fully down. For anything in between, you just have to press the ‘stop’ button at the height desired. Batteries last 3-12 months depending on how often they are used. These blinds can be recharged from inside the tube - there’s a three metre cable that you plug into it and in as little as four hours, your batteries are fully charged. These blinds are available as half cassette, not full.

Once you have selected the option that best suits you and your home, you then have a huge choice of fabrics to choose from. Whether you want a particular colour, texture or pattern; you are bound to find something you love. It then takes 2-4 weeks for the order to come through and we always aim to ensure that all our jobs are fitted within a day. Prices for these blinds range between £200 and £1200.
